Visual Testing and NDT Inspection (VT)

Visual testing for reliable asset assessment

Visual testing (VT) is often the first step in assessing the condition of industrial equipment, structures, welds, pipelines, tanks and pressure vessels. As a non-destructive testing method, it helps identify visible defects and signs of deterioration without damaging the inspected component.

Our visual inspection service focuses on surface condition, visible indications and their relevance to operation, maintenance and further testing. The findings can help determine whether additional NDT methods are required.

What is visual NDT?

Visual NDT is a non-destructive inspection method used to evaluate the visible condition of a component or structure. Depending on access and inspection requirements, the examination can be performed directly by an inspector or with suitable remote visual inspection equipment.

Visual testing can identify visible cracks, corrosion, misalignment, mechanical damage, weld imperfections, coating failures, leaks, deformation and other surface conditions that may affect the condition or performance of an asset.

Where visual examination cannot provide enough information, other NDT methods may be used to investigate hidden or internal conditions.

Why visual inspection is needed

CONTACT US

Early Detection

Visible signs of deterioration can appear before more serious damage develops. Regular visual examination helps identify corrosion, surface damage, deformation and other indications at an early stage.

Clear Asset Condition

Visual inspection provides a documented view of the current condition of an asset before repair, commissioning, maintenance, shutdown activities, acceptance inspection or continued operation.

Less Dismantling

Because many surface conditions can be assessed directly, visual inspection can help avoid unnecessary dismantling and support technical decisions on site.

Downtime Prevention

Early identification and documentation of visible defects can support maintenance planning, improve awareness of asset condition and help reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

How we conduct visual inspection

1. Planning and preparation

The inspection starts with understanding the asset, access conditions, operating environment and purpose of the examination. Available documentation is reviewed, the inspection area is defined and the appropriate inspection approach is selected.

2. On-site inspection

The inspector examines accessible surfaces, joints, welds, structural elements, coatings, connections and other relevant areas. Where direct access is limited, suitable remote visual inspection methods may be used.

3. Recording of findings

Relevant findings are documented with descriptions and visual evidence such as photographs or video where required.

4. Report and recommendations

After the inspection, the client receives a report describing the inspected areas, identified indications and their locations, together with supporting visual evidence.

Where further investigation is required, the report can indicate that an additional NDT method should be considered.

Where visual inspection is used

Industries

Visual inspection is used across industrial environments where the condition of equipment, structures and components needs to be assessed and documented.

Assets and equipment

Typical applications include welds, pipelines, tanks, pressure vessels, steel structures, marine assets, offshore equipment, industrial machinery, lifting equipment and construction elements.

Stages of work

Visual testing can be performed during manufacturing, installation, maintenance, planned shutdowns, acceptance inspections and condition assessments.

Routine and urgent cases

The method is suitable for both routine inspection and situations where a quick assessment of visible asset condition is required before deciding on further action.

What you receive

The result of visual inspection is more than a list of visible defects. The inspection provides a documented overview of the asset's visible condition and identifies indications that may require attention.

This gives the technical team a practical basis for maintenance planning, work acceptance and further inspection decisions.

Why choose our visual inspection service?

The quality of visual inspection depends on the competence of the inspector and the clarity of the reporting. Our approach focuses on identifying relevant visible conditions and presenting the findings in a form that can support technical decisions.

Visual inspection can be provided as a standalone service or as part of a wider NDT program together with other inspection methods.

Questions

Yes. Visual testing is a non-destructive testing method used to assess the visible condition of a component or structure without causing damage.

Visual inspection may be sufficient when the relevant conditions or defects are visible and the purpose is to assess and document the surface condition of an asset.

If the inspection needs to identify hidden flaws, internal defects or material thickness loss, an additional NDT method may be required.

Yes. Visual inspection is often used as an initial examination and can be combined with other NDT methods when additional information about the condition of a component is required.
